This episode is subtitled: ‘Here’s to friendship…’

‘What are you smiling about, Jenny?’

Kim had caught me working on a flower arrangement with a big beam on my face. ‘Oh, nothing,’ I said as nonchalantly as possible.

‘She’s excited for me!’ said Jaz, who had been going on and on about the flat she was going to buy with her inheritance from Old George. Her assumption about my recent joy was incorrect but it suited me not to let on.

‘There’s a long way to go yet, Jaz,’ said Kim, putting a dampener on things. ‘Who knows how long it’ll take to sell George’s hardware shop – the buyer could drag his heels you know.’

There was bitterness in her comment, which I thought was unfair. Jaz had to wait for the transaction to complete before her share was released and it wasn’t her fault that Shaun McArthur had been ahead of Kim in the queue to buy the premises.

Jaz looked up, sad and frowning. ‘Couldn’t you ask him for me Jenny?’

This episode is subtitled: ‘I’m the knight in shining armour…’

‘Is everything okay, Beryl?’ I asked.

‘Yes thanks,’ she replied and got on with her work, head down, looking like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders, not at all the glowing bride-to-be, despite the mass of sparkly diamonds on her finger.

I got side tracked by a customer and didn’t think anything more about it until I heard Kim say, ‘Cheer up, Beryl! Got to have you looking fresh and happy when you see Tommy this afternoon.’

‘I’m fine,’ she said without conviction, and plodded on with her work.

I sidled over to her and plonked myself down at the table she was clearing. ‘What is it?’ I said in as kind a voice as I could. She looked as though she was going to cry.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Thank you Caitlin…’

‘Blue looks happy,’ said Jaz.Blue in his basket from salavebox.co.uk

Blue’s always happy, I thought. More to the point, Jaz was looking fairly happy. A state we’d not seen lately here in Teacups & Tulips.

‘How are things at the flat?’ I asked.

‘Not too bad,’ she said with a smile and carried on with the mammoth task of making 125 rose buttonholes for Sacha, our bride for that day, whose father was spending an absolute fortune on her wedding.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Jaz, please take a shower…’

‘Anyone seen Jaz yet this morning?’ I asked. No one had, although it’s not unusual for her to go unnoticed in the stockroom while she’s rummaging for florist foam or sticks of glue for the glue gun.

‘Sorry I’m late,’ she panted, scooting through to the back whilst taking her coat off, flinching as she flicked her sleeve into a new piercing in her eyebrow by mistake. She didn’t look quite herself. Her clothes were crumpled and her hair looked unwashed.

‘Up late partying with your new flatmates?’ I teased.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Sons and daughters…’

‘I’m sick of it,’ moaned Jaz. ‘I’m nearly 30 and they still want to know where I’m going, what I’m doing, when I’ll be back.’

‘To them you’re still their little girl,’ I said, ‘and while you’re under their roof it’s hard for your mum and dad to see you as an independent adult. You’ve probably just outgrown living at home.’

‘Trouble with parents? I know the feeling!’ said Gary as he whisked past us on his way out of the shop.

‘What’s Beryl done to Gary?’ Jaz asked.

‘He doesn’t seem to be happy that Beryl and Tommy are getting married. I can understand a child being apprehensive about his mum getting a new husband but Gary’s had his own life with Kim for years so I don’t know why he can’t just be delighted for her,’ I replied evenly, although inside I was seething at the way he was treating Beryl.

Kim flew over. ‘What did Gary say?’ she demanded.

This episode is subtitled: ‘The truth is out…’

‘Teacups & Tulips is a flower shop and tea room. Politics is bad for business,’ Kim had said when Jaz tried to get her interested in the anti-fracking march. The march was due to set off from Linnet row, right outside our shop, the following day and Kim wasn’t happy.

Unusually for me, I overslept that morning and flew to work in a fluster. But when I arrived at Linnet Row it took me a good five minutes to work my way through the crowd of protestors.

‘Morning Jenny! Cup of tea to set you up for the day?’ It was Beryl with her Teacups apron askew as usual, selling takeaway teas, coffees and snacks on the pavement.

‘You can’t march on an empty stomach! Get your drinks and snacks here!’ she cried, like a barrow boy and she looked as though she was doing a roaring trade. A noisy crowd was gathering ahead of the start time and there was a real sense of excitement in the air. Politics bad for business? I don’t think so.

This episode is subtitled: ‘I’m going on holiday…!’

‘No, I’ve not heard anything from him…….. No, Julia, I’m not going to ring him – he’s married!’

My friend Julia had contacted me out of the blue and was quizzing me about Shaun who I’d not seen or heard from since our lovely lunch a couple of weeks ago. But then she changed the subject and really made my day. ‘That sounds fantastic. Yes, I’ll definitely come with you!’

Julia had decided to go to Shetland for a few days and wanted me to join her. Woohoo, a holiday!

But she’d only given me five day’s notice. How was I going to manage to get everything sorted at Tulips, get Blue organised with somewhere to stay and gather everything together I needed for a holiday? It’s ages since I’ve been away so I was in a bit of a panic. But calm, level-headed Jaz came to the rescue.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Wish I was glamorous…’

So there we were at the public meeting, keen to have our little protest about the proposed new supermarket. Kim was looking radiant, I was looking like I’d walked through a waterfall and out into a gale, and who should be hosting the meeting but Shaun McArthur.

‘Let’s nab him at the end and call in a few favours,’ said Kim, excited by this new opportunity.

‘What favours does he owe us?’ I said, pointing out the obvious flaw in her suggestion.

‘Well, having a friend on the planning committee’s got to be worth something,’ she replied.

Friend? I had one slow dance with him over 30 years ago, which Kim probably doesn’t even know about. And I bet she’s never spoken to him in her life. My mind was whirring. Friend. I would love to be his friend but I’d like to be in fresh dry clothes with my hair not plastered to my face for my next encounter. Talking to him tonight was out of the question.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Another one joins the cause…’

‘He’s as stubborn as ever!’

Jaz was exasperated at not being able to persuade Old George in the hardware shop to show a bit of solidarity with the rest of us. We’re trying to get all the shops along Linnet Row to oppose the plans for a Skolkensson supermarket in the old pub building opposite but I think George likes to be awkward for awkward’s sake.

‘I hope you have more luck with Colette,’ she said. ‘Kim won’t be happy if we fail to get the hardware shop and the beauty salon on board.’

This episode is subtitled: ‘Where’s Kim when I need her…?’

‘My garden’s not looking too bad,’ I said, ‘now that the leaves are coming through on the shrubs and my miniature rhododendrons are starting to show signs of colour. Oh, and my Clematis Montana is so pretty, winding up over the roof of my neighbour’s pergola.’

Jaz wasn’t captivated by my chit-chat but I prattled on, nonetheless. I’d been feeling calmer about the Open Gardens event in May, thinking that I might not be too embarrassed when visitors arrive after all. I was just telling her about my idea for tubs of bedding plants for a splash of colour when Beryl bustled in, a bit late, taking advantage of the fact that Kim was away for a couple of days.
