This episode is subtitled: ‘The Finale’

‘Yes!’ I cried. ‘Yes,’ at the end of a very emotional day. And I felt very happy indeed.

I’d woken that morning with my heart in my mouth. It was my first official day working for Shaun and I desperately didn’t want to mess it up so I wandered into Teacups & Tulips to summon up some courage, a place where everything was familiar.

This episode is subtitled: ‘That’s told you, Gary…!’

‘I can’t believe I’m finally flying the nest!’ said Jaz excitedly as we pulled up onto the wide drive of the large Victorian semi on Wesley Road.

I see Jaz every day in the same clothes (almost), carrying the same bag, spouting the same anti-consumerism slogans, so I was surprised by just how much stuff we were moving in to her new home. We grabbed a box each and walked up to the front door.

‘Welcome!’ said Ruth, who’d come down to let us in. Jaz had guessed correctly that the middle buzzer was for the flat she was going to be sharing with Ruth. ‘Let me show you round,’ she continued, relieving Jaz of her box, and we headed up a beautiful staircase that swept round onto a big landing. The sturdy Victorian door had had a Yale lock fitted but Ruth had propped it open so we were able to go straight through.

This episode is subtitled: ‘A twin room with a sea view…’

It’s lovely to feel the warmth of the sun on you when you step off the plane at your holiday destination. The sky was cloudless and I was worried that I’d taken Kim’s advice too literally when I packed for chilly Scottish weather.

‘It’s a shame we might be leaving this heat behind,’ said Julia who was more worried that her freshly waxed legs wouldn’t see the light of day after we’d headed further north to Shetland on our connecting flight.

‘By the way,’ she said, conspiratorially, ‘what happens in Shetland stays in Shetland.’

‘Julia!’ I said, ‘This isn’t an 18-30s holiday!’ And besides, what did she think was going to happen on a remote Scottish island with only a handful of inhabitants?

This episode is subtitled: ‘That’s another fine mess…’

‘Oh, Jenny, it was awful,’ said Kim. ‘After all that preparation it was spoiled by an over-excited dog.’ She was reliving the pain she’d felt in her garden the previous day when her attempt to promote Teacups & Tulips during our local Open Gardens event had gone badly wrong. Karma, I thought, for turning a charity day into a publicity opportunity.

She continued, ‘Beryl was a complete embarrassment when she fell.’

‘Oh dear, was she hurt?’ I enquired.

‘I don’t think so. But wait ‘til you hear what she was wearing. I’d told all the waitresses to dress properly for the occasion – clean Teacups aprons, no bare legs etc. But when she fell, she flung her legs in the air revealing pop socks! But that’s not all – she’d been wearing flip flops and one of them shot off and hit someone on the back of the leg!’

‘Who wears pop socks with flip flops?’ I said.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Kim, ready for action…’

‘Hi Kim. Nice trip?’

‘Hi Jaz. What’s this news about the pub?’

‘It’s going to be a Skolkensson supermarket unless we can find a way to stop it,’ said Jaz enthusiastically.

Jaz hadn’t stopped going on about global capitalism and fair trade since we first heard that the Scandinavian supermarket was interested in buying the old pub building opposite. She’d been itching to get out there and march for the small independents. I’d told her that Kim would spring into action when she got back from her short break. I knew she would be on a mission to make sure Teacups & Tulips remained a viable business.

‘Let’s rally the troops!’ shouted Kim, more to herself than anyone else, and she disappeared out of the shop to talk to the other shop owners along Linnet Row.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Oh dear, the builders are in…’

Jaz arrived at 8.30 on Monday morning, as usual.

‘That pendent is lovely, Jaz,’ I said as she took her coat off. It caught my eye because it’s really unusual for her to wear jewellery. It was a crescent moon and a star with what looked like a moonstone. ‘Has Darren been treating you?’ I asked. He had taken her for a burger the night before Valentine’s Day last week but this would have been quite a leap in generosity.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Is Caitlin actually smiling…?’

I was stunned. Petra wafted into Tulips with a £50 note in her hand.

‘The flowers were divine, Jenny. Keep the change.’

I hadn’t expected to be paid at all for the arrangement I’d delivered for her dinner party the other week, let alone get a tip. I made a mental note to pass the additional £5 to Jaz since she was the one who’d created the ‘divine arrangement’. But then I realised the ‘tip’ was a bit of a bribe.

Have fun with chalk pens!

This episode is subtitled: ‘Is this a set-up…?’

Kim’s home from Dubai – hooray! She came back into work on Tuesday and popped her head round the door before heading into Teacups to prepare for the morning rush.

‘Fancy a catch up and a bite to eat in The March Hare this evening?’

I was delighted she’d suggested it. I miss my friend when she’s away and I’m always glad that she’s happy to get back down to earth in our local after the extravagance of somewhere like Dubai.

22. Create Your Own Quirky Tea Salon

This episode is subtitled: ‘Ahh, tea…’

I’m so glad we started ‘Companions’, the Wednesday afternoon session where people in need of a little company come and share a table in Teacups, drink tea and eat cake. Mrs Lucas, one of our widows, tells us how much she enjoys it every time she comes to see us in Tulips. Each week we get a run down of the type of tea she’s tried, which cake she’s eaten and who she’s been chatting to. She gets quite giddy about the varieties of tea available and told me this week that she’s been out shopping for some interesting selections to have at home. Once she’s opened a new pack of loose-leaf tea she keeps it in an old Douwe Egberts coffee jar.

‘I got the idea from you when you said they were too nice to throw away,’ she said, referring to when I did some glass etching to make a treats jar for Blue.

‘That’s a brilliant idea,’ I said, ‘why don’t you write a Salvage Box post telling us all about it? I could introduce you as a guest writer for that week.’

13. Etched Glass Jars

This episode is subtitled: ‘Treat time at Easter…’

How was your Easter? It was a lovely family time for us – thankfully not hosted by me, but my sister Laura. Blue and I spent the whole of Sunday with her, Ray and the children, Jake and Hannah.

They love it when we go, although I totally understand that Blue’s the real attraction. I only get the slightest of welcomes from Jake and Hannah as they race into battle, competing for the bigger share of Blue’s affection (truth is, he’s a pushover for anyone who gives him attention).salvagebox.co.uk - Blue sitting It’s only a couple of weeks since they had him overnight when Kim and I went on our spa break and they’ve been pestering me about when they can have him again. Trouble is, I miss him too much when he’s away.
