This episode is subtitled: ‘Am I being stalked…?’

‘I just wish we’d parted on better terms,’ said Jaz.

‘Don’t dwell on it,’ I said. George was cantankerous and was very lucky you were so nice to him. It’s not your fault he chose to be extra grumpy to you just before he died.’

‘I wonder who will take over the hardware store,’ said Kim.

‘I can’t imagine it will stay a hardware shop, can you?’ I said. ‘I don’t know how George managed to keep it going with so much available to people in discount stores and supermarkets.’

‘It’s not as though his customer service won them over, either,’ laughed Kim. Jaz looked offended on George’s behalf so I changed the subject.’

This episode is subtitled: ‘What was all that about…?’

‘Why don’t you wear that lovely summer dress you got last year?’ said Kim on Thursday night, in preparation for my lunch with Shaun the next day.

It’s a V-necked sleeveless sundress with a bold design in fuchsia and spring green.

‘It’s just not me,’ I said.

‘Nonsense!’ she replied, ‘you look lovely in that. And wear those strappy sandals – it’ll be worth a bit of pain to get the inside knowledge from Shaun.’

I reluctantly agreed to wear the uncomfortable shoes and the sundress, knowing that I’d add a cardigan to cover up a lot of the bare skin.

‘And go on – push the boat out – put some make-up on,’ she pleaded.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Will the building work ever be completed…?’

‘How could I have been so stupid?’ wailed Jaz, for the third time that morning.

I was just about to reassure her yet again when Beryl popped up between us, handed me a funeral tribute that we’d failed to notice had got separated from the rest of the order during the builders’ chaos that morning, and said to Jaz, ‘Love is blind, love.’

It’s a cliché but Beryl’s right. It was obvious to the casual observer that something didn’t add up with Darren but when you’re being swept along in the excitement of young love you can’t see it.

61. How to Recover a Lampshade

Recover a lampshade

This episode is subtitled: ‘Kim confesses…’

‘Here’s the lampshade you said you’d do for me,’ said Beryl passing me a very grubby and old fashioned looking specimen. She wanted to update her bedroom into something prettier but she was on a tight budget so I’d offered to show her how to recover her lampshade with some Cath Kidston fabric I had. Me showing her had somehow turned into me doing it. Never mind, it’s probably easier that way, I thought.

‘Thanks, love’, she said and scuttled off to don her apron and start her shift in the tea room.

‘I quite like Beryl now I’ve got used to her,’ said Jaz, ‘and it’s nice that we’re all together now isn’t it?’

Jaz was enjoying the fact that the tea room and the flower shop are now occupying the same space, although neither of us were enjoying the cramped conditions while the building work continued. She seemed oblivious to Kim’s constant nagging at the builders, more interested in taking her break with Darren who’d come in for a coffee and a piece of lemon drizzle cake.

‘Oh, Jenny, you frightened the life out of me!’ said Mrs Lucas.

‘I’m so sorry,’ I said, ‘I didn’t mean to startle you.’ I’d seen her go into Teacups so I rushed in after her. ‘I just wanted to thank you for that old office chair,’ I said.

‘What?’ said Mrs Lucas, ‘That old piece of junk? Glad to see the back of it. Just gathering dust in the garage.’

43. How to Upcycle an Old Picture

Upcycle an old picture with roller blind off-cuts and left-over emulsion paint

This episode is subtitled: ‘We need you, Jaz…’

I’d been dreading this week. We normally enjoy preparing flowers for weddings, even though it can be a bit hair-raising getting all of our beautiful creations to the right place at the right time on the day. But this particular bride was the bride from hell.

We’d first met Penelope at a wedding fair twelve months ago when she’d approached our stand clutching a pale pink and silver notebook with diamanté details on the front. Jaz had given me a nudge and whispered, ‘See if you can put her off, Jen.’

‘Don’t judge a book by its cover,’ I’d whispered back, thinking that not all brides with mood boards and theme ideas and snippets of silk in diamanté-encrusted notebooks would be a nightmare.

How to make a drawstring bag

This episode is subtitled: ‘Are we managing without Kim…?

Kim is still away but things have been ticking over with me popping next door into Teacups a couple of times a day to make sure the girls are okay. I say ‘girls’ but Joan objects to me referring to her as one of the girls. I’m not sure whether it’s because of her age (61) or the fact that she feels superior after her career in the civil service, which culminated in her being the manager of department of three staff.
