This episode is subtitled: ‘You deserve it, Jaz…!’

‘How does the bookcase look, Jaz? Is the flat feeling any more like home?’ I asked her.

‘The bookcase is great thanks. Well, it would be if my flat mates ever put anything away.’

I’d never thought of Jaz as particularly shipshape but it sounds like these messy flatmates are really stressing her out. ‘Will you stay at the flat, do you think? Or move back to your mum and dad’s?’

‘I’ll stick it out at the flat,’ she said. ‘cos it would feel like a backward step going back home. In any case, I feel like I’m getting more used to them now.’

I wasn’t convinced she was being truthful to herself, but it’s her life.

Beryl scooted over with a tray of dirty pots. ‘Jaz, did I tell you, that Maeve woman came to see you this morning?’

This episode is subtitled: ‘Seize the day…’

‘He won’t listen to me,’ said Jaz. She was worried about Old George from the hardware shop who’d been looking peaky all week. She hadn’t been able to persuade him to see a doctor and in the end her badgering had made him shoo her away.

‘You’ve done your best,’ I said. ‘Come on; let’s just enjoy our evening.’

Our extravagant bride from last week had been delighted with her flowers, and her generous dad had given us a voucher for Villa Italia to show his appreciation. ‘You can have a night off from the rules and regulations of your kitchen in the flat,’ I’d said. ‘Let someone else worry about how the waste is dealt with.’

This episode is subtitled: ‘Lies, lies, lies…’

‘Morning Beryl, you look happy to be in work today,’ I said. She’d arrived more than 15 minutes ahead of her official start time and was bursting with cheer and vitality. In the past few days I’d swear she’d pulled her height up a full two inches above normal (up to about 5’ 2”) and her slender frame was managing to hold her Teacups apron in its correct position for a change. I even thought she might have put a bit of make-up on.

‘Yes, I’m happy to be here,’ she said and cracked straight on with sorting out a bundle of cutlery she’d retrieved from the dishwasher.

‘We’re both early,’ I said, ‘how about we have a cup of tea to get the morning off to a good start?’

This episode is subtitled: ‘What’s Kim not telling me…?’

‘How was Shetland?’ Kim asked breezily on my first day back at work after the trip.

I blushed uncontrollably, said it was great, and quickly changed the subject.

‘How was the charity dinner with Shaun?’ I asked.

‘Fine,’ she said and clammed up.

I was thrilled when he asked me to accompany him – it had been a while since we’d had lunch together – but disappointed it clashed with my Shetland trip. Kim was very quick to offer to go in my place though, and secretly I was desperate for her to say she’d been bored and couldn’t wait to leave.

‘Did you make any useful business contacts?’ I asked; after all, it was the reason she was there.

‘Yes, I might have.’ And she waltzed off to continue her work in Teacups. Hmmm… what was she not telling me?

This episode is subtitled: ‘My walk of shame…’

‘This is gorgeous,’ said Julia, looking at the almost white sand and clear pale sea lapping onto it. ‘Why is no-one else enjoying this beach?’

‘I suppose going on a summer beach holiday with your coat and scarf is a bit off-putting for most,’ I replied, turning my collar up against the blustery Shetland wind.

We made it across to the rocks for our short ascent to the grassy cliff-top to find that the rocks were wet from the previous night’s rain and really quite slippery.

‘Watch out, Julia,’ I said, ‘your shoes haven’t got much grip.’

‘Oh I’m fine,’ she said, ‘I’ve always been sure-footed.’ And she strode out to prove her point, got half way up and screamed as she slipped back onto the beach, landing flat on her back.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Phew, no harm done…’

‘Beryl, don’t touch that cake while I’m out.’

Kim’s instructions to Beryl were as clear as if she was giving them to a naughty five year old. It never ceases to amaze me how Kim gets away with speaking to her mother-in-law like that. Beryl doesn’t need to be told not to be naughty but I suppose there was every chance that she’d have cut a slice of that beautiful ruby wedding anniversary cake and served it to a customer with a cup of tea.

The cake was ready for the extravagant surprise party David Jones had organised for his wife the next afternoon and Jaz and I were just working on the flower displays. I’d arranged to drop off all of the items the next morning but I wanted to get them finished before closing time because I had my young niece, Hannah, staying with me that night and had in my mind we’d make something with moths and a big moon – much more up her street than fancy flower arrangements.

This episode is subtitled: ‘An Eventful Open Gardens Event…’

‘You haven’t moaned about the supermarket for 24 hours,’ I heard Beryl say to Kim. ‘You given up your fight to stop it opening now?’

‘No!’ cried Kim, indignantly. ‘It’s just that I’ve got to focus on getting all this Teacups & Tulips publicity material sorted for the Open Gardens event this weekend. Anyway, Jenny knows the guy on the planning committee so I’ve asked her to work on him in the meantime.’

I winced. Firstly, I didn’t want to try and manipulate Shaun on the planning committee and secondly, I had a lot of preparation to do in my garden too. I was keen to help raise some money for charity but I was scared my little patch of heaven wasn’t going to be to good enough for visitors. The supermarket campaign would have to wait.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Ground, please swallow me up…’

‘That’s great, Sandra. Well done,’ said Kim, congratulating the manager of the chemist for getting her head office on board with our protest.

Meanwhile, Jaz had her head in a flower arrangement she was making and there was a faint rhythmic murmuring coming from her direction, ‘Yaaay to independents. Nooo to multinationals. Yaaay to independents…’ I don’t think she was conscious she was doing it.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Jaz has a hangover…’

‘Jenny, can I talk to you about the building plans?’

Kim had started her question from outside the shop and travelled right up to the counter in the time it took me to look up from reviewing the orders for the day ahead. How can she move so quickly?

‘Sorry, Kim, I’ve got a bride due in for a consultation any time now and Jaz hasn’t arrived yet.’ Kim is so enthusiastic about the business that she can’t wait until our business catch up on Saturdays if she’s got something on her mind.

53. How to Recycle Christmas Cards

Turn this year's old Christmas cards into tags for next year

This episode is subtitled: ‘Red, like Snow White’s apple…’

‘Morning Jenny!’

‘Morning Jaz. Oh, you’ve changed your hair!’ I said, looking up as she burst into the shop.

Things are still quiet here in Tulips. There is always a little flurry of wedding consultations following romantic New Year’s Eve proposals but generally it’s a chance to clean up, reorganise our supplies and plan our Valentine’s Day designs. That doesn’t require a full complement of staff so I’m pleased when some of them want to take their holidays after Christmas. Jaz and I make a good team when it comes to sorting things out behind the scenes.

Jaz’s hair was red. Not orange like people with red hair have, red like a pillar box; red like a strawberry. I can’t believe I’m saying this but she did actually suit it. That, and her clumpy Doc Martens gave her a kind of ‘don’t mess with me’ look and sometimes that’s exactly the message she wants to give.
