This episode is subtitled: ‘The Finale’

‘Yes!’ I cried. ‘Yes,’ at the end of a very emotional day. And I felt very happy indeed.

I’d woken that morning with my heart in my mouth. It was my first official day working for Shaun and I desperately didn’t want to mess it up so I wandered into Teacups & Tulips to summon up some courage, a place where everything was familiar.

This episode is subtitled: ‘That’s told you, Gary…!’

‘I can’t believe I’m finally flying the nest!’ said Jaz excitedly as we pulled up onto the wide drive of the large Victorian semi on Wesley Road.

I see Jaz every day in the same clothes (almost), carrying the same bag, spouting the same anti-consumerism slogans, so I was surprised by just how much stuff we were moving in to her new home. We grabbed a box each and walked up to the front door.

‘Welcome!’ said Ruth, who’d come down to let us in. Jaz had guessed correctly that the middle buzzer was for the flat she was going to be sharing with Ruth. ‘Let me show you round,’ she continued, relieving Jaz of her box, and we headed up a beautiful staircase that swept round onto a big landing. The sturdy Victorian door had had a Yale lock fitted but Ruth had propped it open so we were able to go straight through.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Oh dear, the builders are in…’

Jaz arrived at 8.30 on Monday morning, as usual.

‘That pendent is lovely, Jaz,’ I said as she took her coat off. It caught my eye because it’s really unusual for her to wear jewellery. It was a crescent moon and a star with what looked like a moonstone. ‘Has Darren been treating you?’ I asked. He had taken her for a burger the night before Valentine’s Day last week but this would have been quite a leap in generosity.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Is Caitlin actually smiling…?’

I was stunned. Petra wafted into Tulips with a £50 note in her hand.

‘The flowers were divine, Jenny. Keep the change.’

I hadn’t expected to be paid at all for the arrangement I’d delivered for her dinner party the other week, let alone get a tip. I made a mental note to pass the additional £5 to Jaz since she was the one who’d created the ‘divine arrangement’. But then I realised the ‘tip’ was a bit of a bribe.

26. How to Make a Lantern From a Can

Give your cans another lease of life before you recycle them! Turn them into garden lanterns for long warm summer evenings.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Here comes the summer…’

We all know the score; summer arrives, but not necessarily the sun. The long light evenings should be perfect for an outdoor gathering of friends but the weather is so unpredictable you never know whether you’re going to need your wellies or your sunglasses.

Kim and I decided we’d take a chance last Saturday evening and we invited the girls from work and their partners for an informal do in the garden. My garden? Well, I offered but Kim wanted to try out her new fire pit so she was keen to host it at hers. It was only a gesture on my part because I think we both knew that we’d struggle to fit everyone into my bijou patch of cottagey quaintness.

5. Make New Candles from Old

salvagebox.co.uk - candles and wine

This episode is subtitled: ‘Dinner at the big house…’

I’m so unsuited to wild nights out in the city. Am I too old or just a bit boring? It was a relief when Kim and I managed to escape early last week from the Teacups & Tulips post-Christmas party, leaving the young ones to enjoy themselves.

This week I’ve been to Kim and Gary’s for dinner, which was lovely, but I wish she wouldn’t go to so much trouble just for me. Mind you, I go to a lot of trouble myself, deliberating over which bottle of wine will be acceptable, whether I should take a gift, whether to dress up or dress down. Actually, I’d never dream of arriving for an evening at their house in jeans so the choice was either my Whitestuff pinafore (casual but expensive enough to meet with approval, I think) or slinky black trousers and sequined top (glamorous, as long as I can hide the thigh bulges with a cushion when I’m sitting on the sofa). The pinafore won.
