‘That’s great, Sandra. Well done,’ said Kim, congratulating the manager of the chemist for getting her head office on board with our protest.

Meanwhile, Jaz had her head in a flower arrangement she was making and there was a faint rhythmic murmuring coming from her direction, ‘Yaaay to independents. Nooo to multinationals. Yaaay to independents…’ I don’t think she was conscious she was doing it.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Of all the gin joints in all the towns…’

‘I love being busy,’ said Jaz, ‘but isn’t it nice to be calm once in a while?’

I agreed. ‘And it gives us a chance to enjoy the new surroundings. Did you notice our new containers for the gift cards match the containers for sugar sachets on the tables? Kim’s design really has brought the two halves of Teacups & Tulips together.’

Jaz was just about to tell me something else that she’d spotted when a customer came into the shop. There was something familiar about the way he walked but it wasn’t until he reached the counter that I realised it was Shaun. His face was a little craggy but there was no doubting it. My legs felt as if they were giving way so I grabbed hold of the counter and composed myself.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Bespoke is best…’

With my covered notebook tucked under my arm I headed next door to Teacups (the warm side of the shop) for my usual late Saturday afternoon get together with Kim to discuss how things were going in Teacups & Tulips and to focus on any hotspots for the following week or so.

‘I think we should give the staff something handmade for Christmas,’ said Kim, ‘You know, show we’ve put a bit of effort in.’

Was she serious? Kim’s never made anything in her life and we’re on the run up to Christmas which, in a flower shop, is a long hard slog filled with customers wanting grave pots, wreaths, table centres, bouquets, bespoke Christmas decorations as well as off-the-shelf decorations and gifts. I’m not complaining, it’s tiring but we do love it at Christmas, it’s just that there isn’t time to fit anything else in.

Make a simple string tin with scissors handy

This episode is subtitled: ‘Everything but a bonfire and children…’

What a lovely evening for a bonfire party! Saturday was freezing cold but clear and dry and I was warm as toast because I’d put plenty of layers on (you get to be an expert at layering-up when you work in a flower shop).

Kim called it a bonfire party – we had toffee apples, sparklers, garden lanterns (strung from tree branches with my handy supply of string), ginger cake (made by me), in fact pretty much everything except a bonfire and some children. I’d brought Blue with me – Kim will stretch to well behaved dogs but rarely to children.

This episode is subtitled: ‘What’s a warming drawer…?

Kim and Gary are in Dubai. It’s not somewhere that appeals to me with its concrete, glass and air-conditioned shopping. I’d prefer to lose myself in the past, wandering round ancient Moorish palaces in Spain, marvelling at the beautiful courtyards and gardens (I’m told they are worthy of marvel), rugged mountains in the background…. Oh, I hope I get there one day.
