This episode is subtitled: ‘Here’s to friendship…’

‘What are you smiling about, Jenny?’

Kim had caught me working on a flower arrangement with a big beam on my face. ‘Oh, nothing,’ I said as nonchalantly as possible.

‘She’s excited for me!’ said Jaz, who had been going on and on about the flat she was going to buy with her inheritance from Old George. Her assumption about my recent joy was incorrect but it suited me not to let on.

‘There’s a long way to go yet, Jaz,’ said Kim, putting a dampener on things. ‘Who knows how long it’ll take to sell George’s hardware shop – the buyer could drag his heels you know.’

There was bitterness in her comment, which I thought was unfair. Jaz had to wait for the transaction to complete before her share was released and it wasn’t her fault that Shaun McArthur had been ahead of Kim in the queue to buy the premises.

Jaz looked up, sad and frowning. ‘Couldn’t you ask him for me Jenny?’

This episode is subtitled: ‘Beryl too, eh?’

‘Here you go Jenny, my treat,’ said Beryl and she put a piece of millionaire’s shortbread in front of me. She looked over at Kim who was sitting at the table with me and said smugly, ‘It’s okay, I’ve put the money in the till.’

I’d slumped into a melancholy that Kim was doing her best to shake me out of. And Beryl was obviously trying to help as well, which was sweet of her.

Kim asked her for a piece of carrot cake and she scooted off to get it.

‘She’s working out okay isn’t she?’ I said.

‘I never thought I’d say this,’ Kim replied, ‘but I don’t know what I’d do without her now. She’s always going to be a bit rough around the edges but the customers love her and, even though she’s a bit clumsy-’

This episode is subtitled: ‘The truth is out…’

‘Teacups & Tulips is a flower shop and tea room. Politics is bad for business,’ Kim had said when Jaz tried to get her interested in the anti-fracking march. The march was due to set off from Linnet row, right outside our shop, the following day and Kim wasn’t happy.

Unusually for me, I overslept that morning and flew to work in a fluster. But when I arrived at Linnet Row it took me a good five minutes to work my way through the crowd of protestors.

‘Morning Jenny! Cup of tea to set you up for the day?’ It was Beryl with her Teacups apron askew as usual, selling takeaway teas, coffees and snacks on the pavement.

‘You can’t march on an empty stomach! Get your drinks and snacks here!’ she cried, like a barrow boy and she looked as though she was doing a roaring trade. A noisy crowd was gathering ahead of the start time and there was a real sense of excitement in the air. Politics bad for business? I don’t think so.

This episode is subtitled: ‘I’m going on holiday…!’

‘No, I’ve not heard anything from him…….. No, Julia, I’m not going to ring him – he’s married!’

My friend Julia had contacted me out of the blue and was quizzing me about Shaun who I’d not seen or heard from since our lovely lunch a couple of weeks ago. But then she changed the subject and really made my day. ‘That sounds fantastic. Yes, I’ll definitely come with you!’

Julia had decided to go to Shetland for a few days and wanted me to join her. Woohoo, a holiday!

But she’d only given me five day’s notice. How was I going to manage to get everything sorted at Tulips, get Blue organised with somewhere to stay and gather everything together I needed for a holiday? It’s ages since I’ve been away so I was in a bit of a panic. But calm, level-headed Jaz came to the rescue.

This episode is subtitled: ‘I made a sale…!’

‘What do you think?’ asked Kim, evidently very pleased with the sketched cake design she was showing me.

‘Ooh, Kim, it’s beautiful!’ I had to admit she had excelled. The understated splendour of this ruby wedding celebration cake was stunning. She’d taken on board my plans to use red calla lilies in the flower displays and come up with something that I was sure my client, Mr Jones, would be delighted with.

Now all I had to do was persuade him to order the cake without Kim realising I didn’t have it in the bag already, and without Mr Jones realising I was trusting Kim to deliver when his only encounter with her so far was the unfortunate chaos during the local Open Gardens event.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Wish I was glamorous…’

So there we were at the public meeting, keen to have our little protest about the proposed new supermarket. Kim was looking radiant, I was looking like I’d walked through a waterfall and out into a gale, and who should be hosting the meeting but Shaun McArthur.

‘Let’s nab him at the end and call in a few favours,’ said Kim, excited by this new opportunity.

‘What favours does he owe us?’ I said, pointing out the obvious flaw in her suggestion.

‘Well, having a friend on the planning committee’s got to be worth something,’ she replied.

Friend? I had one slow dance with him over 30 years ago, which Kim probably doesn’t even know about. And I bet she’s never spoken to him in her life. My mind was whirring. Friend. I would love to be his friend but I’d like to be in fresh dry clothes with my hair not plastered to my face for my next encounter. Talking to him tonight was out of the question.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Will my garden be good enough…?’

‘Ooh, I’d love to see your garden, Jenny,’ said Mrs Lucas. She was delighted that I’d volunteered to be included in our local Open Gardens event next month.

Why do customers naturally assume that florists are good gardeners? We work with cut flowers that have been grown by someone else – an expert!

‘It’s a very small garden,’ I responded, suddenly unsure that I wanted a stream of locals judging my mediocre efforts. I’d signed up to the event to get into the community spirit and help raise some money for charity.

This episode is subtitled: ‘Pull yourself together, Jenny…’

‘No Beryl, not like that,’ I said exasperatedly for the umpteenth time that morning. She’d been loaned to us from Teacups to help with the Mothers’ Day preparations and, whilst she was very keen, I was just wondering whether we’d be faster without her when Guus, our lovely Dutch flower supplier, came in with a mountain of new stock for our busy weekend orders.

‘This place is looking better every day!’ he said.

‘I know. I just wish we hadn’t still got two extra bodies and a set of tools in here with all these flowers to contend with,’ I whispered, with a little nod towards Joe and Barry, the builders. Every day they’d promised they were nearly finished.

This episode is subtitled: ‘I’m glad I’m single…’

The builders were here bright and early on Tuesday morning, cheerfully cracking on with their work at the back of the shop. Then I did a double take. Then I looked at Joe, the leader of the group.

‘Beryl said it would be fine,’ he said, looking a bit guilty.

They’d propped a door open with Blue’s basket and Blue was still in it! Blue in his basket from salavebox.co.ukI reluctantly gave them one of my new doorstops to use instead, unsure whether it would survive the day. But that would be better than Blue not surviving the day. They aren’t a bad bunch of guys but builders are builders, used to working in a mess.

Kim stomped in late and in a foul mood. The new Teacups’ cupboards were looking great but she could see at a distance the handles were not the ones she’d ordered. She marched to the back of the shop to have it out with them.

This episode is subtitled: ‘What does Jaz see in him…?’

‘Yes, the date is still free. We’d be delighted to prepare your wedding flowers for you…’

The bride from last week was on the phone, booking us for her wedding flowers and I was in the process of taking her deposit. Phew, I thought. I was convinced we’d lost that one.

While I was talking to her, a thin man with a pasty white face walked into the flower shop and was trying to say something to me so I put my hand over the phone and told him that I’d be with him in a moment. But he was insistent.
